In today's fast-changing illustration industry, staying up to date with the latest trends, market demands, and career opportunities is crucial. Through the years, I have gathered a list of valuable online resources that I share with my students—among them YouTube channels that provide essential knowledge, whether you’re just starting or looking for new challenges and opportunities. While formal education in illustration can be beneficial, it's not a necessity. However, keeping learning and staying informed about the industry is non-negotiable.
Here, I want to introduce 3 YouTube channels that share knowledge generously and provide on-point insights into the illustration world.
1. The Illustrator’s Guide – by James Hughes
James Hughes runs one of the most insightful channels for illustrators looking to navigate the industry. As a former illustrator and illustration agent, he also seems to have a talent for mentoring and sharing concise, practical educational content. His videos include portfolio reviews, career advice, and an insider’s perspective on working with agents. His approach is simple, direct, and brilliant, making this a must-watch for both beginners and professionals. If you're looking for clear, practical guidance, this channel should be at the top of your list.
Chris Piascik is an illustrator and he runs a very enjoyable to watch and insightful to listen channel. He talks honestly on illustration and his career as an illustrator. He also openly discusses ADHD and how it influences his creative process. Typical content includes tutorials, reviews of illustration-related tools, tips and tricks, and lettering—something he specializes in.
